Meeting Bao

dscf1764It’s done! We finally met the new member of our family…

The drive to the orphanage was quick–15 minutes maybe. When we pulled up, out came two kids I’ve only known from pictures–first KimAnh and then Bao. They were smiling and waving immediately.

We got out of the van and approached the two little ones, who were bundled in coats despite the warm weather (to us!) To these folks, 75 degrees is cold. Hard to fathom.

Anyway, so Bao had been told that we were coming so he knew about our arrival and appeared very much okay with it. He let me hug him and he smiled right away.

The coordinators have told us that Bao and KimAnh are actually cousins. COUSINS. The last time they took Bao to see his grandparents, KimAnh went with him because, like I said, they are cousins (!)

So, we’ve got pictures of his and her entire large family on the boat on which he lived for the first six years of his life. His mother was there, but from what we hear, they really didn’t have a relationship. His uncle played a big role in his life, and Bao is coming home with a very well cared for doll that his uncle gave to him when he was one year old.

The family picture album that we sent Bao several months ago is remaining with his family in Hue. They requested to keep it. Tears in my eyes…how about yours?

Amazing. Anyway, I don’t have a picture of us all together yet, but I can add this one, that hubby took this morning. G can’t stop from hugging Bao. He touches him gently on the arm and just smiles. I said, “You love your new brother, don’t you?” He just smiled and nodded. They’re watching Cars right now and Bao seems to really like it.

We’re off to lunch in a few minutes. What a day.

Congratulations! What a huge and wonderful day. I think it’s awesome that Bao has those birth family connections and that they know about his new family and obviously care so much about him. All good stuff. Is KimAnh also coming to America? Will they be able to visit one another? How great that would be!

Yay!!! Congratulations. That is so sweet that his birth family wants to keep your pictures, and wonderful that you have pictures of his family. Hopefully he and his cousin will get to keep in touch.

Just realized that if Bao thinks 75 is cold – he is in for an awakening when he gets to Baltimore in January! So many new surprises for him!
