A post from Hanoi

dscf16421It’s so hard to believe it, but we’re finally here! It’s Saturday morning as I write this, and we’re about to go out and get acquanted with Hanoi.

As far as getting here, the 15 hour flight was a breeze. It was no more painful than a flight to Europe, which surprised both hubby and me. KAL had so much to do on the plane that we rarely got bored. I didn’t get a wink of sleep, despite my intense desire to do so. Every time I got close, one of my relatives would saythings like, “Um, mommy? I don’t like this movie.” Or, “Um, mommy? This is taking a lot of minutes to get to Vietnam.” It worked out okay, however. I was very able to fall asleep when we arrived at the hotel just after midnight.

If I only had one airline that Icould fly for the rest of mylife? It would be KAL. Honestly. It was that good. Plenty of space, great food, nice employees. And hubby said it was the best landing of a  jet he’d ever experienced. I think he said that the pilot “greased the landing,” or something like that. Evidently, that’s good. And he’s right–it was smooth.

We met with our coordinator this morning, and our G&R ceremony has been moved up to Monday (!) So, we will meet Bao at 8:30 on Monday morning, go to lunch, and then at 2:00 have the ceremony, where he officially becomes a part of our family. That evening, we will take a cruise on the Perfume River as a family of four.

When we woke up this morning (little boy G, that is), G went to the window, looked out, and exclaimed, “motorcycles!”

We looked out and, as expected, hundreds of motor scooters were cruising by with people on their way to work. Ladies in their coned hats were carrying fruit and other identifiable items  on the street corners. It was a nice view. Hubby said that the building we could see just below us is the Hanoi Hilton where John McCain spent some time back in the day.

So we’re off to explore this beautiful city. Can’t wait to post more later. Comment at will. Thanks for following our journey!

Hubby and I were on a date last night and I was telling him that you should be landing in Hanoi right about then! I couldn’t wait to check your blog!

Glad to hear that you made it safely and that the flight was easy! We’re REALLY glad to hear that, since we’ll be taking the same flight when it’s our turn! What hotel are you staying at? We have TENTATIVE reservations at the Somerset Grand, on the hope that our approval comes through this week and we can travel right after Tet.

Congrats on having the G&R moved up! How exciting to know that you’ll be a family of 4 in just a few days!

Hi Sue! How nice that you thought of us on your date! Well, I’m so pleased to tell you that the flights are really great. No delays. No “turby lance” as G says. Really great. One hang up for us was when we arrived at baggage claim in Hanoi. Once in a while, during our wait, a bag or two would trickle out. Very slowly. No idea why,and I don’t recall anyone else posting the same expericences, so I think it was a fluke. But it was annoying after such a long flight. We arrived at 10:35, but didn’t leave the airport until about midnight if that gives you an idea. But again, I think it might have been a fluke.

We’re staying at the Somerset Grand! It’s great because it’s right in the middle of the city and within walking distance to so many things. It also has a washer/dryer in the room which is coming in very handy. Highly recommend it! We have a little market right down stairs with just about everything you might need. The restaurant is pretty good and breakfast comes with the room so we plan to do that every morning. I had pho our first morning, but they have the typical continental breakfast buffet too, which is very good.

Oh, Sue! I can’t help but wish you were here with Hung.
🙂 But I know, it wasn’t meant to be for some reason. God has His reasons! Can’t wait to get together with you when you guys get back! Hugs, Jeanne.
